Encore Players Community Theatre presents

The Wizard of Oz

Auditions – Ages 10-99

Follow the Yellow Brick Road with us this summer, and get ready to have fun from the time you set foot in auditions! You are welcome to prepare a song with a tuneful melody to sing for us if you wish–we will have piano accompaniment–or if not, we will ask you to sing a simple and familiar song so we can get an idea of your vocal range. Be prepared to stay for the full hour slot for which you have signed up. No other preparation is necessary–we’ll do some reading aloud, some movement games, some interplay work with your fellow actors, and generally get acquainted as we start on the road to Oz!

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to prepare a monologue?
No. We will give you something to read. Might be excerpts from the script, might be a newspaper article, or a poem. We may ask you to read it different ways, like you’re scared, excited, surprised, angry, sleepy, etc.

Do I need to sing?
Yes. Everyone in the cast of a musical sings! But the good news is, if you are not planning on auditioning for a lead singing role, you can sing a simple song with the piano, like Happy Birthday, or Row, Row, Row Your Boat. You are welcome to prepare a song, but please bring the sheet music with you, so the music director can accompany you. This is important for several reasons. If you bring music, you get to sing your choice of song! No music=Happy Birthday!

What is the rehearsal schedule like?
We make the rehearsal schedule a week in advance. Planning the rehearsals is like putting together a giant jigsaw puzzle with many moving parts! We call musical rehearsals and small groups or scenes at first, and ensemble cast members get called maybe only a couple of nights a week. As the performance time draws closer, the rehearsal will be more intense. Typically, we go from 6:30-9:00 or 9:30. The last half of July, expect to be called almost every night. We hope that you will be in town and available for the 8 weeks of rehearsal. Try not to plan your vacation in July! It is very difficult to work on a team-project when members of the team are missing. We expect commitment.

How will I know what’s going on?
We will set up an email group to stay in contact with you. There will be many, many communications from our team: directors, stage managers, costume managers, etc, so you will need to be responsible for checking for weekly schedules, and making sure you are where you are required to be. More on that later.

I have a very mature 8-year-old? Can they audition?
Unfortunately, no. Our rehearsal/performance schedule is grueling at the end of the process. It will test everyone’s stamina. Our rule is: You must be 10 by July 1st, 2017.

If my child is in the musical, will I have responsibilities?
Yes. Parents will be required to take a shift “kid wrangling” back stage during the performances, or some rehearsals. Parents are encouraged to get involved in other ways…backstage, make-up, organizing snacks, sewing costumes, helping with set building, painting, etc. Being a part of the Encore Players Team is a great way to meet people and make new friends.

I want to be a part of this show, but don’t want to be on stage. What can I do?
Let us know! This show is a HUGE technical undertaking. We will need help with building, painting, finding props, making costumes, publicity, creating the program, moving scenery, lighting, sound, communications. If you’ve got a special skill that can be applied to our Musical Theatre project, we want you!!
